Exchange B2T fails, B2D is successful

Symantec Forums,

I've been searching around for a solution to a problem that has just started recently on one of our BackupExec servers (2010 R3) and its ability to backup Exchange server 2003, but have been unable to find anything that resembles what we're experiencing.

We have approximately 45 BackupExec servers that maintain backups on all ranges of services.  One of these servers has recently been unable to backup to tape from an Exchange 2003 server.  On the same server, Exchange backups to disk work flawlessly.

For the tape library in question, it's used with multiple server backups with different targets on this same server with no problems either.

So, for this one particular server it can backup Exchange 2003 with no issues to disk, but not to tape.  The tape library works fine.

This problem only started about two weeks ago for this server, and backups to tape previously worked.  No configuration changes have occurred since the failures started happening.

The error indicated is:

Error category : Resource Errors
Error : e00002fe - Cannot log on to MAPI with the specified credentials. Review the resource credentials for the job, and then run the job again.

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-766

Would anybody happen to have any ideas?

The GRT catalog process when going to tape is different from going to disk and is more dependent on the credentials etc being correct

You have stated that nothing has chanhged in the environment - but just in case make sure that the Exchange and Acrive Directory Security of the account is still Exchange Full Admin/ Domain admin and make sure that it stil has a uniqely named mailbox (someone may have created another mailbox with a similar name) and also make sure that that the mailbox is NOT hidden from the GAL etc.

Thank you for your response.

The account that the BackupExec service uses is actually a domain account, and is used in quite a few other server's Exchange server backups.  (Well over 40 other servers use the same credentials, and they haven't had any of these same issues).

As per suggestion, I went ahead and double-checked the account's memberships, and it has the following groups:

  Domain Admins

  Domain Users

  Internet Browsers <-- Local

  Exchange Administrators

One item of note, the account's not mail-enabled, so it could be the root of the problem as you're stating that it needs to be and be reachable through the GAL.  - But the same account has no issues backing up any of the other Exchange servers in our forest.

For the Exchange backup credentials, we have it set to use the "System Logon Account" and it always tests fine.

On note the failed tape backups on that particular server in our case are all failing at approximately the same time (20 minutes into the backup at all about 43,700,000,000 in size).

The backups are starting - and run for a while - but just can't get past that point on this particular server.

Servers and services have all been restarted multiple times.

The backups to tape are still failing with the same error code, while the B2Ds all run fine, and I've been unable to find anything pointing to what could be the cause of this.

Would anybody have any ideas?
