Failed vs. Completed With Exceptions

I oversee our rather small IT department and am beginning to have repeated failures of our back up - using 10.0.

What I am trying to do is determine the difference between a failed backup and one that is completed with exceptions.

Completed with exceptions seems straight forward- back up is done with some files/folders skipped.

But a Failed one, in its ominous red, looks bad. It too lists certain files/folders which caused the failure but I can't determine if the rest of the data on that particular tape are still goo. Logic tells me, no, otherwise it would have reported out as "Completed with Exceptions" but I need to find out for sure.

Thank you.

Should be.  As long as the files show up in the Restore Selection window, you should be able to restore them

Generally, the Exceptions are minor, skipped files type of things

Failed is generally much more serious.  A complete share not backedup, a database not backed up etc
