I'm using Backup Exec 9.1 on Windows NT SP 6 and I keep getting spurious errors like this one :

Job ended: 19 February 2005 at 05:12:04
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xa000fe09 - The directory is invalid.

Final error category: Resource Errors

Errors
Click an error below to locate it in the job log
Backup - C: Directory not found. Can not backup directory \WINNT\\ia\Micr.tmp and its subdirectories.

The directory it fails to backup changes each time, but is always under c:\winnt with a garbage name.

I've searched Veritas knowledge base but cannot see any mention of anything like this.

Can anyone help?

Hi,

With regards to your query, it seems that you are not having successful backups. This may happen if the selection list contains selections which are not available.
Please refer to the following technote:
- "The directory is invalid" (a000fe09 HEX or e000fe09 HEX) is reported when a backup job fails http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/266179.htm

- A backup operation fails with the error message: "Directory not found. Can not back up directory and its subdirectories" or "The directory is invalid."
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/207001.htm

We hope this will help.

Thanks for the links. Unfortunately they didn't help.

The relevant backup selection is simply c:\*.*

The directories under c:\winnt it is trying to backup just don't exist (and change names each time anyway) so I don't see how I can exclude them either.

Any other ideas? Thanks for any other help you can give.

Hello,

Please refer the following technote to create an exclusion list.

Thanks for the link, but it hasn't helped me.

How can I exclude something if I don't know it's name?

I don't want to exclude all folders under e.g. c:\winnt as many of them are valid folders and do need to be backed up.

Hello,

Please go to Tools > Options > Job Logs and select the option "Summary information, directories and files processed". In job log verify which files are giving errors and exclude them. If they are illegible, then there is no other possibility of finding out the name of these files.
