HI,
I need your comments with regards to this scenarios. I inherited this network from a previous IT staff.
Setup:
The Tape Drive (HP Storageworks ULTRIUM 1760 SAS Internal Tape Drive / G2 / Autoloader) is currently connected to a Domain Controller server (DC01). It uses Symantec BackupExec 12.5 for Windows which is also installed on the same server DC01 using Server 2003 Std. 64 bit.
All the catalogue are saved on same server as well.
Issue:
The tape drive became faulty due to the heads are overused (5 years already) and HP recommends to replace the entire unit with the same model.
My Recommendation:
I want the new tape drive to be installed to a different server called SRV01 (Server 2008 Ent 32 Bit) instead to DC01 which is a Domain Controller.
Also, I want to use Symantec BackupExec 2012 to be installed on SRV01 server where the new tape drive will be installed too.
Queries:
We only use backup to tape using incremental and full backup and nothing else.
Since there are loads of changes like the Physical Server, Operating System and the Backup software:
1. Will the restore work properly using BackupExec 2012 that I used to backup from the old version BackupExec 12.5?
2. Is there anything that I should consider before making these changes?
Your suggestion will highly be appreciated.
Arthur

Aditionally,
here are a few links to better provide you a view of B.E. 2012. To include videos/demos of the product and some of its features

Hi
1. Will the restore work properly using BackupExec 2012 that I used to backup from the old version BackupExec 12.5?
Yes restore should work fine with BE2012.
2. Is there anything that I should consider before making these changes?
But please note before you upgrade to BE2012 you should first test that on test enviorment as it is completely changed from the older version in terms of it design and working
Please go through upgrade guide to see what exact changes it offer
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH180232
Finally if you plan to migrate all the configuration like jobs and catalog from old server to new server with new version of backup exec 2012 the following link should help you to do that
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH67296
Hope that helps
Thanks

HI Donald,
Sorry my mistake, it is not an upgrade with the BE since I will install the BE2012 to a new server.
So it's a new installation and leave the old BE12.5 to the DC01 server.
1. In that scenario, will restoring backup from tapes uisng BE2012 not an issue if I succesfuly migrated the catalogue?
Thanks.

You'll Still be in good shape.. As mentioned by Backup_Exec you will not have issue with restore the data backed up with 12.5 with 2012. Inventory and catalogue the media and run a test restore. But be advised "Also mentioned by Backup_Exec". The U.I. is very different as well as the approach to the backing up of data from previous versions of B.E. It is suggested that you review the provided links to familiarize yourself with the product prior to deploying it.
