Is the agent for SQL Server needed to backup MSSQL?

Hello,

Is the agent for MS SQL Server needed to backup an SQL Server if I buy Symantec Backup Exec 11d for Windows Servers (Not SBS!)? The key features on the product page says "Enables simple, easy-to-use continuous data protection of Exchange, SQL, and Windows file servers.". It says nothing about any extra agents being needed.
If an agent isn't needed, what extra functionality do I get if I buy one?

Yes, you will need an agent to backup SQL, Exchange, Remote Servers, etc.

To expand on Ben's repsonse a little -

To even connect to a remote ServerOS machine, say a File and Print serve, you will need a Remote Agent serial on the media server, and the RemoteAgent service running on the  remote computer

To do "hot" backups of database servers, you will need an appropriate serial installed on the media server, and if the DB server is not the media server, the RemoteAgent service installed and running (the database server agent serials include a remote agent)

Without the DB agents,  you would need to shut down the database server service and do a flat-file backup of the database files.
