Migrating Files in a Tierd Environment, How To

We're currently using Backup Exec 10d for routine server backups. We're in the process of implementing a new HP EVA SAN with performance tiers; some drives will be fiber channel, some with be FATA. Although we've looked at a number of file migration products for moving the files through the tiers based on file age, Veritas sales rep says Backup Exec along with some of the add-on tools can handle. However they haven't been able to supply a plain english explanation of how to do it.

The files are medical PACS images. We intend to leave image files on primary (fiber-channel) drives for their first 6 months of life, migrate them to tier 2 (within the same SAN but to FATA drives) for another 18 months, and then migrate them to LTO3 tape (in a tape library) to live out their life (with a copy of the tape going to offsite storage). The image viewing applications need to be able to retrieve study data no matter where it is stored.

We have a Windows Server environment. There are currently 3 servers that receive image files from diagnostic equipment and will be writing them to the SANs primary storage. Our medical records 2 machine cluster in addition to these 3 servers (each having a modality analysis application) would need to be able to retrieve image files from any of the storage tiers when requested for review.

Can someone explain how we could setup Backup Exec to perform these file migrations?

Thanks for your help,

Hello Rudie,

you have said:

Have they atleast told you WHICH agents and options if not how?

Also please provide more information on FATA and HP EVA.

Thanks

Amruta,

The options were:

- Backup Exec Adv Disk Backup Option
- Backup Exec Library Expansion
- Backup Exec Remote Agent SRV CAL

HP has 2 types of drives that can be inserted into one of their EVA SANs. The higher performing, higher per/meg cost fiber channel drives, and FATA (fiber attached ATA) which are available in higher capacity units, but have a duty cycle that might be 30% or so less. This is in contrast to what many SAN vendors are now using - SATA drives.

Hi,

You can install Backup Exec in evaluation in SAN environment and also test the functionality of different agents/options.

For more information on agents/Options refer:

Thanks!
