Only cleaning tapes in backup exec :S

Daniel_Kifarkis
Level 3
Our Configuration:
Windows 2000 server sp4 with all updates.
Backup Exec 9.1 sp5
HP Surestore LTO Tape Autoloader C7145

The problem:
A few month ago i started to have problems when trying to backup my servers. Backup exec list all tapes as Cleaning Media with media lable: CLN:003E94A58XX(XX = different numbers).
When i run an inventory on the tapes i get this message in the log: Error : a0008231 - Library - cleaning media was mounted.

Sometimes when i restart my server I can run an inventory and Backup Exec understand its a data tape. Then i can run one backup. After that is done it goes back to think every tape in a cleaning media.

does anyone know what causes this problem?
Most thankful for any help!

Regards
Daniel

Hey,

Thank you for the answer. Im not sure, but i think the problem started when someone ran windows update and installed a driver for the LTO Drive.

I had a similar problem when a drive was going bad. How many drives do you have? If you do a full inventory do all of the tapes show up as cleaning? If not you may be able to isolate it down to one drive by forcing the inventory to a specific tape unit.

Daniel_Kifarkis

its only one drive but 9 slots in the robot.
You think it might be broken?

I cannot be sure but in my case I was able to isolate it to one drive since I had multiple drives. In the troubleshooting steps we removed the "enable bar code rules" under Devices-library-Configuration tab. This did not fix it. I also do not remember having any errors that came up in the using the HP library and tape tools. I would also think that if the tape unit has a LED display that shows the correct tape labels I would think that the bar code reader may not be a problem.

I dont have bar code rules enabled.

gah..im getting really nervous about anything shall happend to a server.
Anyone got more hints? Reinstall BE? upgrade to w2k3? Get a new backup station?

The tape drive drive was broken and i bought a new LTO robot.
