Remote BE Agent install crashes on Win2003 and 2008 server

 Hello Symantec,

This is my problem:
I have recently installed a new backup server with BE12.5 SP3 on Win2k3 R2 standard x64.

My problem occures when I try to remote install BE agents on to other windows servers.

For instance when I try to install BE agent to a Win2k3 SP1 std server I get the error log posted beneath.
(not sure how much of the log you need,  but since its very long I only copied in the last part with the FATAL ERROR;)
Im also receiving a similar Fatal Error when installing to 2008 server (and I dont install AOF on 2008)
The backupAgent seems to be installed when looking in Add/Remove Programs, but it seems there are some updates that dont make it according to the log file.

Please help me find a solution as I realy want my new backup system to work flawlessly.

Hi there, have you tried doing a local install by copying the agent folder from a fully patched media server and then running setupaa.com (or setupaax64.cmd)

Also you mentioned not installing AOF on Windows 2008 - but you don't need to install it on 2003 either - operating systems that fully support VSS - do not need Symantec's open file driver (VSP) in order to perform open file backups (as long as you are on a recent version of Backup Exec). As such you only need to install the open file agent on Windows 2000 systems if running Backup Exec 12.5

Thank you for your swift reply.

I have tried to install the agent using the local copy and that works fine, no error message or log file.
But doing it that way you dont get the BackupExec 12.5 install progress bar and you will also need to add the server manually to your "favoritt resources" folder afterwards.


What I found in my recent test is that even though I get the error log posted above the agent seems to be working fine.

- I installed the Agent using the remote procedure.
- got the error log on the BEWS update procedure.
- Did NOT need to restart the server.
- Ran a successful backup.


Could you explain for me which component is failing in the log, is it an update for the Agent (BEWS)?
Why is it failing when remote install and not local install?
Is this failing component crutial for anything backupwise?

Im using this in a enterpriser environment and would be very happy not needing to locally install all agents...:)

It looks like it might be one of the hotfixes that is having a problem with the push install and yes if one hotfix is not installed - it will mean that you don't have a fix applied for an issue so could affect your backups. As to exactly why it is failing, you will need to open a full tech support case for us to reserach that as it might be something in your environment.

To monitor the installation using the .CMD file (silent) installs - once it is complete the comand being run should finish executing - however I usually use Task Manager to monitor the activity of setup,.exe and msiexec.exe if I need to see when it has finished.

For the publishing, once the agent has installed - on the remote server run VXMON.exe (located in the Backup Exec\RAWS Program files folder - once this has opened, click the Publishing Tab, Click Change settings and then go back to the Publish Tab and ensure that publishing is enabled and that your backup server has been specified  in the publishing list.

This should sort out your need to manually add the information into the BE server console.
