Restore Job Failed - Error e000848c

Tim_ESI
Level 2
Trying to do a test restore of a single message on a exchange 2007 mailbox, recieveing the error "e000848c - Unable to attach to a resource. Make sure that all selected resources exist and are online, and then try again."

Backup jobs seem to run fine, just not the restoring.

Tried the following link:
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/knowledge_base_sli.jsp?umi=EvtID=V-79-57344-33932

But none of them seem to apply to my problem.  The target restore is the same exchange server and storage groups.
Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Hi I got the problem resolved from phone support, but to answer your questions:

1. are you trying to restore to Recovery Storage Group on the Exchange server?
No.  Restoring to a messages in a single mailbox on the same exchange server.

2. Are the backups GRT backups?
Yes

3. Are the backups on tape/disk?
Backups on disk.

The solution to the problem was that the backup account did not have a mailbox. Thanks.

I'm borrowing this thread because I have the same problem as you Tim. I’m trying to restore a single message to an ex2007 sp1 mailbox. My backup is on disk and with GRT.

Backup exec 12 running on win 2003 sp2 and exchange 2007 sp1 on windows 2008.

My backup user already had a mailbox and I get the error "e000848c" anyway. I have checked all the permissions and everything else I can find in the knowledgebase. Here are the last pieces from the debug log.

Hi,

I'm having the same problem when trying to do a restore of a single mailbox item.
I have Exchange Server 2007 SP1 on Windows Server 2008 and a Symantec Backup Exec 12 on Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 32bit.

This is from the remote agent log on the Exchange server:

I have a mailbox for backup exec account created and it is functional. The account is also domain admin and Exchange Server Organization Adminsitrator. MAPI is enabled on the mailbox and on all the other mailboxes.

hi,

please make sure the latest version of CDO/MAPI version is installed on media server and exchange server.

**Important** Make sure the Backup Exec services are running under the same account which is used to do a restore.

Also, make sure the user you are restoring is present in the exchange server.

Dear BackupExec Freaks,

Dou you have any idea why a restoring a single mail from backupexec 12.0 Backup Exchange 07 GRT Backup doesn't work allthough i followed this following things.

BackupMedia Server = Win2008 32bit Server

Exchange Server = Win2008 64 bit Server

Installation the same CADO on Backup and Exchange Server Exchange Management Tools on BackupServer (Service Pack1 the same version as the Exchange server)

I followed this following link and create a username called backupexec this have the required rights. This user will used for the remoteagent access (backup and restore) and for all Backupexec services. The User has an Mailbox on and is not hidden from the Global Address list.

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/288370.htm http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com

/docs/298300.htm

The Exchange GRT Backup are on disk and completly succeded. The Error on the Exchange RA ist the

following:

[4184] 07/21/08 17:49:07 FS_BlowOutMachine:

What are you referring to when you say that the backup account did not have a mailbox?  I'm having the same problem trying to restore to the same mailbox on the same Exchange server.

As i know the account which you use for the backup should have a mailbox account on this exchange server and it must be shown in the global address list.

I've tested all things but i was ineffective.

I have the same problem trying to restore a single user.  Done all the checks and double checks like everyone else.  Funny part is if I do a restore of the entire Mailbox instead of just one user or one message, everything restores correctly.

We need an answer on this as the whole point in GRT is to be able to restore a single user or message without having to restore the entire Mailbox.

Was there ever any resolution on this issue? I'm experiencing the same problem. I've run through all the listed trouble shooting and I'm still unable to restore a single item or mailbox.

After uncountable hours of trials I´ve finally failed to restore
a single mail from a Backup-to-Disk folder on Backup Exec for Windows 12.5 Rev 2213
into a Exchange 2007 First Storage Group Mailbox Database, continually ending
up with error E000848c - unable to attach a resource.

Our setup is exchange 2007 on windows sbs 2008 server and backup exec on a different
windows 2008 server (with only Backup-to-Disc folders as backup media on locally attached RAID, drive E: )

I´ve applied the latest updates for BE, disabled IPv6 on both machines
as proposed in https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/ex07-w2k8-grt-unable-restore-anyone-have-working
entered the machine names in hosts file, I´ve used restore wizard and not, tried different options
for exchange redirections, deleted an installed backup-to-disk devices again, installed same MAPI Version
on both severs, still no go.
Backup Mailbox Database is always successful, restore never.

I´ve enabled SGMon debug output with all options and it alway shows an ERROR 10 : "Invalid Device" entry,
but it is unclear to me what device is meant by that very entry, see below.
Any small hints in which direction to investigate further are welcome..

I had the same problem, tried everything said above but it didn't help.

I solved problem this way:

1. installing SP3 for backup exec 12.5 and latest hotfixes
2. completley unistall and then install remote agent on exchange 2007 server
