Hey Guys,
I was looking a while back at restoring our SBS 2003 DC from nothing but a backup and I got to thinking.
We currently have an SBS2003 server (And a few other member servers) being backed up via Backup Exec 2010, which is working fine. But from terms of disaster recovery, if the whole server was lost and we had to restore to new hardware with SBS 2008 from literally nothing but the tape backups, where would one begin?
I was considering that to perform this operation you may need to restore the information to SBS2003 and migrate, but then of course we get dissimilar hardware issues.
Even from this stage i'm a little unsure of the procedures...
How would anything like this be accomplished with Backup Exec 2010?

...or check the link on the Symantec site below which refers to Symantec System Recovery...this is more likely a better option!

Thanks guys, i'll look over the links.
The System recovery software looks rather nice. Naturally though, instaling a new product for a company with an existing backup in place is difficult to convince!
I'll see what I can do.

The second link looks rather tasty to follow. I'll have a look over that one.
Will that article be applicable for SBS 2003 / Exchange 2003 as well as SBS 2011?
More to the point, can this work from bare metal to another dissimlar server?

recovering to dissimlar hardware would not work with backup exec , and as suggested by Craig BESR would be a good options to look at.

It would be applicable yes, and it can do bare metal restores to dissimilar hardware. Check out the site as it is very informational, and there is also a forum on Connect for this...
