Selective restore to Windows XP from Server backup

We backup a server running Windows Small Business Server 2003 onto a DLT VS80 tape drive. Is it possible to selectively restore from these tapes to a PC running Windows XP if we attach a second DLT VS80 to this PC?

We want to do this in case we are forced to move away from our office for a period of time and cannot get access to our server but do have a copies of back up tapes. We would only want to restore applications data and not systems data. We cannot afford to duplicate our server at a second site but would have a PC available to take the applications data with a DLT VS80 attached.

Sure

When you create a Restore Job, near the top of the form should be a redirect button, click that and specify the Server\Share that you want the data to go to

Then select the data files and/or directories and execute the job.

Thanks for your message. Just to check that we can load 9.1 onto a separate (not network connected to the server) PC running Windows XP Professional with a DLT VS80 attached (with a SCSI interface). Then we can take a tape backed up on the server (under Windows SB Server 2003) move it to our second site, load it on the PC running XP Pro and do a selective restore to the XP disks as you describe. Would the above work ok?

The reason I am checking this is that I have been told that you cannot run 9.1 under Windows XP Pro (after all it is called Backup Exec for Windows Servers) and if you could then the data backed up under Server 2003 would not be compatible with XP Pro.

Thanks again for your help

Hello,

Backup Exec version 9.1 can very well run under Windows XP Pro. You can check that in the software compatibility list too which you can find at the following link:

VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 for Windows Servers - Software Compatibility List (SCL)
http://support.veritas.com/docs/261695

You can try running the restore after cataloging the tapes. In case you need to redirect the restore, to add to Ken's mail, you can check the technote given below:

Title: How to perform a redirected restore in Backup Exec for Windows Servers
http://support.veritas.com/docs/196460

Hope this answere your query. In case you still have any more queries on ths post, do write back to the forum. However if we do not receive your update within two business days, this post would be marked assumed answered and would be moved to answered questions pool.

Regards.
