SharePoint farm backup doesn't truncate SQL logs...

I'm running BE 12.5 (with all patches from LiveUpdate) and backing up a SharePoint 2007 farm.  The backup works great, never fails.  But, as part of the process, I assumed that the SQL transaction logs would be truncated.  But that never occurs.  I'm only doing full backups.  What am I missing?

Hi there,

Make sure that you're not using Advanced Open File Option in your jobs...this is known to cause issues with logs.
If you are, remove it. If you're backing up System State, and other files etc that need to have AOFO on, then look into splitting the jobs and running both to the same tape as per...

Thanks.  I tried turning off AOFO on the SharePoint farm backup job, but the logs still don't get truncated.  Is a SharePoint-specific job supposed to truncate logs?  I also noticed that other SQL backups I'm doing aren't truncating logs.  What gives?

Hmmm well actually now that I double check, the backup size was a lot smaller.  The actual log file on SQL is still full size though.  Will it not shrink the log file after truncation?

Mmm...

If you go into your actual job in Job Setup, go to Microsoft SQL and make sure that the Backup Method is: Full - Backup entire database or filegroup.

I do not think BE truncates the logs in a SQL backup...  I've always had to have my DBA's write some processes to wipe them after my backups were successful.

is the free space within the log files reset?

BE does not truncate the transaction logs when it does a backup of a SQL Server database.  What I do is to have another job to backup and truncate the logs after backing up my databases.  This second job uses the Log - Backup Transaction Logs option.
