Slow Backups

I am working with a server experiencing intermittent slow backups.:
Compaq ML 570, NT 4.0 Domain Controller (yes, I know :) )
BE 6.6.3808
Compaq 40/80 DLT
~9G backed up
~2.3G free space on system partition
Daily full

Backups will run fine for several days/weeks (~150M/min for system partition, ~300M/min for data partition), then will run extremely slowly for 1-3 days (~34M/min system and 24M/min data). There are no errors in the event logs or in the job logs.
To date, we have:
1) Cleaned the drive
2) Turned off virus scanning
3) Uninstalled and reinstalled 8.6.3808

Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated.

Network Backups or Local Backups?
do you have any scheduled system maintenance that may be iterfering? Defrag, Virus Scan etc?

Ken,

Thanks for your reply.
There are no scheduled tasks running during the backup.
Backups are all local, and this server does not back up and remote servers.

Hmmm

I really doubt that it will make any difference, but you could try 8.6.3878

I thought about that (since it's going to have to be done anyway for patching). I tend to agree that it probably will do no good (and wanted to see if anyone had any ideas on the specific problem before loading it), but we'll give it a shot and see.

Did you happen to see my other ? as to whether the agent browser service is really necessary if one is not backing up any remote systems? If so, any idea?

Thanks,
Charlie
