Soft Seek & Write Errors

Lawrence_-_CHFS

Hi,

I'm seeing tens of thousands of such errors on all my tapes. I've tried updating my SCSI Drivers, cleaned the drive, used a new tape for backup but the errors are still coming.

My tapes are between 50-250 hours used and the drive 2000hrs used. My cleaning tape was first mounted in May 2010 and since used only 7 times.

Am I missing out on anything here?

Please help me.

Thanks.

What kind of device do you have ?
You may check if you have a firmware available for your device and a maintenance tool.
(for example HP has the HP Library & Tape Tools)

If you use new tapes and they still have a lot of errors, it usually means that the tape drive is faulty and should be replaced..  As suggested earlier you should test it with the manufacturer's utility.  Make sure that you stopped all the BE services first and select the write test.  Even if the drive passes the diagnostic test, you should insist on replacing the drive if the errors continue.
