Soft read and write errors - should I be concerned?

Hi,
We have Veritas 9.installed on our windows 2000 os server. Veritas has been showing in the tape stats that our tapes are receiving soft read and write errors. As I understand these are not critical errors but our tapes have been receiving more and more of these soft read and write errors and I am concerned.

E.g. at the moment the average soft errors from the five tapes is 150 soft read errors and 2100 soft write errors.

I have updated the SCSI drivers, Made sure veritas 9.1 has latest patch. Also updated the tape driver with Veritas tape driver. We also clean the tape drive once a week, the server is stored in a state of the art dust free NOC centre. the tapes are about a year old, each tape is used once a week. Our tape drive is a seagate dat72 - I have used the Dell short and full diagnostics software on the tape drive and no errors have been found.

Should I be worried about these soft errors?

Any help / advice would be much appreciated. Smiley Happy

As long as the Diagnostics show no problems, you should be safe

But, the soft errors will slow your throughput a little

If you start to regularly get Hard errors, it is probably time to run the Diags again
