Hello,

I just purchased Backup Exec 12.5. Currently I am working on setup the new backup server. Can someone tell me if I can use Synthetic backup to backup VMware images?

Thanks for your help!

Hi RebeccaX,

what do you mean by Synthetic backup ?

at the moment I'm using the following configurationfor the Backup Server Spec (All in one server):
  1. Windows Server 2003 Std R2 SP2
  2. SQL Server 2005 Std. SP3
  3. VCenter Server 4.0
  4. VCB Framework 1.5
  5. Backup Exec 12.5 (patched to the latest).
  6. Converter Stand Alone 4.0.1 --> for manually restoring image.
I don't use the BE 12.5 AVVI (VMware Agent) though.

hope that helps.

I'd suggest giving this document a read as well:

Looks like it will work best using this method.

Can someone tell me if I can use Synthetic backup to backup VMware images? - If you are backing up the flat files without the AVVI agent, then yes you can.  If you are using the AVVI agent, then no

Synthetics are best for small file counts, and flat files.  Anything else, it wasn't designed for that, and BE will do poorly.
