Very slow throughput backing up large amounts of image files

Dell Powervault 124T LTO-2 tapes
Backup Exec 10d Evaluation version

We are testing the backup throughput of large amounts TIFF images (tens of thousands of files) and it is very slow. The throughput is about 110MB/min. We were able to get over 1000MB/min on database files (2GB, 10 files). Anyone has any insight on why out throughput dropped significantly when backing up large amounts of files? All drivers are up to date. Thanks in advance.

That's just the nature of the beast

A single large file will ALWAYS back up significantly faster than lost of small files that total the same number of MB or GB

That's because the backup software has to process each file separately, create a catalog entry, mark the end of file on the backup media itself etc. For 10s of thousands of files this adds significatnly to the overhead For a single large file, most of the time the data is streaming, with only minimal overhead

Do you think a different version of the backup application or another 3rd party software might be better? If we really need to increase the throughput, what would you advise us to do?

I don't think that there is anythng that you can do. This is not a BackupExec problem. Try using NTBackup - you'll get the same results.

As I said before - A single large file will ALWAYS backup significantly faster that thousands of smaller files that total the same number iof bytes.
