What triggered expiring old backups in backup exec. 2014?

I have client with Backup exec. 2014 SP1 and hotfix 225092.

I thought that hotfix was supposed to fix the software so it would delete expired backups from USB devices.

The client has limited USB disks and I need to delete all backups off the Friday full disk each week.

They are set to only hold on to for 2 days.

When I get on the storage and check the backup sets they all say expired.

If I manually force a expire of one of them the rest go away also.

So it is like it does not trigger it so it can clear them out.

I am sure I have left it in to see if when it starts the next Friday backup if it deletes them then and it does not.

I see there is a SP2 available has anyone had any issues with it and does it help this?

Thanks

Mike

Yes, I recommend updating to the latest service pack

BE 2014 SP2 - Released 2014-12-15 http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH225093   and the post SP2 Hotfix 227745 - Released 2015-02-11 http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH227745

also go to the Backup Exec button < Configuration and Settings < Backup Exec Settings and Click on Storage to make sure the option "Allow Backup Exec to delete all expired backup sets" is enabled

Sounds good and thanks.

I will check on Monday and see.

I think we went down this road once and I think I checked the part about enabled but will double check.

Be careful when you use the option "Allow Backup Exec to delete all expired backup sets", you may end up having all your backup sets deleted and without anything to recover your server.  See this document

http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO99585

The disk storage on the USB disks are managed by DLM.  See this blog and my article for a better understanding of when backup sets are deleted.

One possible reason why the expired backup sets are not deleted could be that the USB disk is offline when the DLM grooming cycle is done.  You can try leaving the USB disks for more than 4 hours. See this document
