Why is Quick Erase Not Available?

I'm using Tandberg DLT V-4. The tapes are not locked.

When I insert a tape, the Media Task list under Devices in Backup Exec 11d does not allow me to erase the tape for re-use. The quick and long erase options are greyed out.

How can this be?

Is there a way fo force erase a tape?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Hi DHC,

Thank you for using Symantec's online support.

Here are some ideas to resolve this:

  • If you haven't inventoried the tape first, please run an inventory job against the tape before attempting to erase.
  • Verify that any physical write protection has been enabled. (Tabs often on the back of tapes.)
  • Look at the properties of the tape device from Windows Device Manager and see if it is using Symantec drivers.
  • Disable and re-enable the tape device in Backup Exec.
  • Download and install the latest tape drivers for your build of Backup Exec.
  • Compare your hardware against the Hardware Compatability List to ensure proper support. (http://support.veritas.com/docs/282249)

Also, remember that Re-labeling the tape is essentially the same as a Quick Erase
