You can either do a fresh install of BE 2012 or do an upgrade in-place.  BE 2012 is quite different from older version of BE. Do read my article below first.  It contains links to other documents.

Hi

You can perfrom direct upgrade from 12.5 to 2012 as direct upgrade is possible , Also I presume you have tested BE 2012 on some testing machine & then are upgrading as it has got new GUI  & new approach which is server centric approach.

Thanks

Do not dive into the new version without checking all the changes that you will have to accommodate to.

Hi,

Check the upgrade guide which will detail how to do this:

Here are a couple of other links that might prove to be useful:

Watch the videos on the video section of Connect as well to get a feel for it. I'd also recommend running BE 2012 on a stand-alone server, or a VM...you need to play around with it as it has changed significantly (check around the forums!).

That said, when you are ready to upgrade, it's straight-forward. Stop your BE services, and then grab copies of the Data/Catalogs folders before launching the upgrade. No need to multi-step upgrade, so you're good-to-go with your version.

Once the media server is upgraded, install BE 2012 SP1a. Then push-install the agents from the media server to any remote servers you might have.

The biggest change operationally (not even the GUI) is the fact that each server is now given its own job...so if you currently have 10 servers in 3 jobs, you'll have 10 servers in 10 jobs. Be aware of that!

Thanks!
