shadow copy error backing up server

the other day while our jobs where running we received a job failed on this server with this error.

not sure why this happened

 this server is not running Exchange nor Windows 2008

...have you restarted the server in question and then rerun the backup job...?

I can not restart the server at this time it is in production.  it looks like it may have too be. is there anything else we can do?

...have you run LiveUpdate or updated your media server manually with all available patches, before pushing these out to your remote server via a push-install?

On the production server run

vssadmin list writers

in a command prompt - if any of them are not in a stable state then you will probably have to restart the server
