Did you mean:

status of SP4

I see that SP4 was released on Saturday (October 8, 2005) however, I did not receive an email from the notification service (YES, I am subscribed with the email address of rick@ivy.csustan.edu) and the service pack is not listed as an available update when I go to the "Veritas Updates" page.

I am running Backup Exec for Windows Servers Version 9.1 Rev. 4691

Should I go ahead and install this SP anyways?

Thank you.

If you are thinking of applying it "Just 'Cause", I'd hold off. There have been several reports of it not installing properly.

Search the v9.1 forum for "SP4" to see the reports so far.

I did see and read the other thread concerning installing SP4. I posted my message because I am surprised that I did not receive an email notification and secondly, that the SP is not listed as an available update when I go to the "Veritas Updates" page. I am hoping to hear the 'official' word from a Veritas/Symantec employee. The documentation for this SP states "This service pack contains a critical security update".

If you have bookmarked the old Veritas entry to BackcupExec for Windows Servers Support (with the grey header), the updates link you get is outdated, you need to enter from the Symantec page (with the yellow header)

http://support.veritas.com/menu_ddProduct_BEWNT.htm

Go to the Updates and Downloads page from that link and you should find SP4

You are not alone in not gettinig software update notifications, even if you have signed up for them.

Complain to your seller/reseller. Support from Veritas was bad enough, since Symantec bought out Veritas, it has gotten worse, if you can conceive of that.

That's interesting -- before the buyout, I never once got an email notification about vulnerabilities/fixes. Now I get them.

don't install any SP until you know for certain it will fix any issues with your current Veritas installation.

after installing SP3 from SP1 i am having issues with backing up the last mailbox where it freezes.

with the recommendation of veritas tech support installed SP4 and still having same problem.

"Don;t fix it if it is not broken.!"

Hello Rick,
you may install SP4. Also check out the issues resolved by this Service Pack.

Is the "Veritas Updates" service not working correctly? Why wouldn't SP4 be listed under "List Available Updates" if it is for the version of BackupExec I am running ?Message was edited by:

Anyone feeling like "deja vu"? I remember the same thing happening with SP2 & SP3. It is now 5 days after SP4 was first announced to the general public (I agree with previous posts about concerns over delays in getting notifications, I did not get notified by the automated email until Oct 13, which was many days after it apparently was available), and SP4 is still not showing up in Veritas Update.

Veritas, oops, I mean Symantec - What the h%$*^$ is going on?

Hello,

This technote maybe useful to everyone. Please go through it before installing SP4.

Failing to install SP4 (or SP3) for Backup Exec for Windows Servers v9.1.4691, asking for SP1 or SP2 when already installed

Except that several people have reported that Symantec Phone Support refuses to pass the call along even after being referred to the TechNote, unless the customer pays for an incident!

A better solution is here (Thanks Simon!)

So, this is suppose to be the official answer to my original question regarding the status of SP4?

The technote is not useful.

Do you realize that we consider backing up our data as critical?

The information and statements in the technote are not acceptable.

Do you really expect me to attempt to install this SP knowing that it is very likely my backup routines will be affected?

I cannot believe that the author of this technote needs to wonder “If you feel this issue has a direct business impact for you and your continued use of the product …”

Yes, this issue has an impact on my continued use of the product. If the product is not reliable and the company will not stand behind their product, I definitely will look elsewhere.

What about the mention of a SP4a in the thread “SP4 install requires SP2 WHEN SP3 is loaded. Why?” http://forums.veritas.com/discussions/thread.jspa?threadID=54419

The VERITAS Update *utility* is not too smart... it only checks the value of two Registry entries:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\C896E102E88BEA14C864B3ABACCD6D7E\Patches\AllPatches

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\C896E102E88BEA14C864B3ABACCD6D7E\Patches\Patches

You've probably got a corrupt value in one of the two...

BTW: Check out Simon's thread titled, "Here's how you can get SP3 or SP4 to install" <>. I tried it, and it works. Note: To make the VERITAS Update icon disappear from the system tray, I had to import all the Installer values back into the Registry AND modify the two REG_MULTI_SZ settings to include the SP4 GUID .
