Direct upgrade from BE 11d to BE 2012 is not possible. You have to be either on BE12.5 or BE2010.

Refer to http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH178545

Catalogs format is same in 11d &  BE2012 so you will not face any issues with the catalogs or restore.

You can either upgrade from BE11d -> BE12.5 ->BE2012 or

BE11d->BE2010->BE2012

Link to download BE12.5 https://www4.symantec.com/Vrt/offer?a_id=51792

Link to download BE2010 R3 http://trialware.norton.com/files/fc/Backup_Exec_2010_13.0.5204_MultiPlatforms_Multilingual_DVD.iso

Hi There best would be from be2010 r3 to be 2012 ,also ensure that be2012 is new version in terms of GUI and its working from prior version, so I would recommend it installing on test machine first, get used to it and then once tested and used to think of upgrading. Thanks

...it doesn't really matter. I'd say go to BE 2010 R3 and then BE 2012. BE 2010 is still readily downloadable.

I would prefer  BE11d ->BE12.5->BE2012

Note: Before any upgrade stop SQL server BKUPEXEC service and do make a copy of DATA

and CATALOGS folder, these folders are located at X:\Program File\Symantec\Backup Exec\

If in case you come across any issue you can rebuild BE using above folders.

Also refer to direct upgrade article http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH159557

As CraigV mentioned, it really doesn't matter what version you prefer i.e. 12.5 or 2010 as this is just an intermediate upgrade step (and no licenses are added either)

Prolly, the only factor I would consider would be the size of the installer ;)

And lastly, if you do not want to preserve any settings whatsoever, a clean install of 2012 is easy as well...( and would recommend to test 2012 is a lab environ first as this version is quite different from its predecessors)
