Abnormal growing of Index volume after upgrade

Zenworks2001

Hi all,
During february 2009, we've successfully upgraded our Vault from v6 to v2007SP4.
However, since that period I observe an abnormal growing of the Index volume.
In attachment, you'll find an excel file contening 2 tabs with growing trends of Index volume and archive.
Our level of indexing has always been full.
I though to establish a correlation between number of files archived and volume of index but this one could be done with reporting (Vault store usage summary). However, reporting has been implemented since 3 weeks...
So, I can't explain to my storage admin why this rapid grow of index.
Many thanks for your feedback

This *could* be due to more file formats supported for indexing.
Are you e.g. working with Office 2007?

Hi Michel,
We're using Office 2003 SP3.
Many tx for your feedback

As a rule of thumb perhaps look at the below taken from the performance guide. Do you index sizes fit in with this at all?  In addition are you able to indentify which files in the indexes have grown in general?

Disk space used by indexes
Calculate the expected index size as follows.
1. Take the size of the original data.
2. Take a percentage of this according to the indexing type.
Indexing type Percentage
Brief 3%
Medium 8%
Full 12%
The percentages will be less if there is little indexable content. This is often the case
where there are large attachments such as MP3 or JPEG files.
Disk space used by databases
Metadata is added to the database for every item archived. Temporary space is used
to hold information on items that have not been backed up or indexed. Permanent
space is also used to hold data in the Directory database. We suggest that an extra
4 GB is allowed for this.
Future versions of Enterprise Vault may include more information in the database
to provide more resilience and verification of archived items. The following
calculations allow room for expansion.
To calculate the space for Exchange Mailbox and Journal archiving, proceed as
follows:
1. Take the number of items archived.
2. Multiply by 500 bytes.
3. Add 4 GB.
Additional space in the database is required to store an item when the Vault Store is
located on a Centera partition but is not in a collection. In addition to any other
calculations:
1. Take the number of items.
2. Multiply by 500 bytes.

Genie:

According to his Excel Sheet, it's more like 29% Index Data....
That's more than double... !

However, did you maybe add Journaling when you upgraded?
Any other things which were changed?

No journaling has been added.
The only setting I've changed is enabling recovery of used deleted items (14 days maintained)

Sorry did not look at that.

May be worth while logging a case to review further I'm afraid.

Also if you do log a case, let me know the case number and Ill speak to the Engineer if it is based in EMEA.
