EV7.5SP2 - Unable to perform Search request in Browser

Hello,

When trying to perform a search using the .../enterprisevault/search.asp I get a message stating:
Unable to perform search request

I checked to see if the nic was primary (only one)
I checked to see if ev was in read-only (it is, but the Enable Restore is not)
I checked eventlogs (nothing) and IISlog (nothing)
I checked permissions on IIS (and the archives just to be sure) (permissions correct)
I did an IISreset
Trace is running

this has worked before. Not sure when it started failing.

Strange thing is that I have access to 3 archives on 3 different EV-servers. 2 fail, 1 works.
I see no direct difference between the 3 servers.

Anyone an idea what to look for further?

Thanks,

Gertjan

Hello all,

I had the case closed.
We're upgrading to version 8.0SP2

I'll check this after the weekend. If it still happens, I'll open a new case.

hmm..

Nothing in IIS?  Does /enterprisevault/archiveexplorerui.asp work?

DNS resolves correctly?

Hi tony,

archiveexploreui.asp does not work either.

In the dtrace, when looking for my archive-id, I see below:
69    13:25:35.139     [6192]    (StorageCrawler)    <4036>    EV:M    CArchiveCrawler::ReportError The request was refused because the server is temporarily unavailable.   [0x80041b3f] [Qualifier: The request was refused because the server is temporarily disabled.   [0x80041b3c]]
70    13:25:35.155     [6192]    (StorageCrawler)    <4036>    EV:M    CArchiveCrawler::SetContext Requestor:Indexing Service ArchiveEID:147CB98AD5BA6BC42A74631EDC61BA6751110000DMS (hr=The request was refused because the server is temporarily unavailable.   [0x80041b3f])
71    13:25:35.155     [6192]    (StorageCrawler)    <4036>    EV:M    CItemFetcher::Stop Timeout:10(secs) Thread: Stopped ==> Stopped (hr=Success  [0])

Server temporarily unavailable? I can connect fine, so why unavailable. To me, this is indicating the registry keys that place EV in read-only (or not) (not on the server my actual archive is on, see below)  Anything else I can look for?

our url is dms.xxx.xx/enterprisevault/search.asp (points to the directory ev-server) (does not work)
I tried servername.xxx.xx/enterprisevault/search.asp (ev-server my archive is on) which does work. Seems to be an issue on the one server that is referred as dms.xxx.xx

hmmm.

you this sounds familiar!  can you set up a HELLO page and try to access it?

http://dms.xxx.xx/hello

Hi Tony,

I copied the iissstart.htm, renamed it to hello.htm, and edited it to show the word hello

When going to dms.xxx.xx/hello   it gives an ' page cannot be found
When going to dms.xxx.xx/hello.htm it shows the edited page

Waht familiar. I am no html/website expert, so asking me to do this is a little tricky ;)

Thanks for the help sofar!

I confirmed that users having the problem can access the search and use it when connecting to their specific ev-server

Hi Tony,

I know this sounds familiar....
I'm running the show alone at the moment. This includes preparing upgrade to EV8SP2, migrating databases, installing Exchange2007, migrating, installing OWA,  getting hardware, and trying to save 23 TB 2nd line storage (copying to NAS at the moment)

Gimme a break and a solution ;-))

I'll color my hair another color next week somewhere.

The issue must be on the server which is being referenced as dms.xxx.xx

When connecting there, I get the error.
When connecting directly to the EV-server my archive is on, I can search.

I'm really having a blond moment, as I cannot figure out what is causing this.

I compared IIS settings on the dms and ev server, same.

Anyone?

Had something very similar to this just last week and it was the NIC binding order, but you have checked that one already.

In this case, it "might" be DCOM permissions, but you won't see the errors logged normally.  Can you enable DCOM logging as per the MS article here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892500

See if you then get a DCOM error on either server.

I was seeing this issue with a customer yesterday.  A reboot of the EV Servers resolved the issue.  :)

Hi Tony,

Reboot of all EV-servers, or only the affected ones?

thx.

Well, we rebooted both but I think just the one that the site alias points to would have worked.  :)

Hi Tony,

I'll try the site alias server first. Other wise I'll reboot my 24 ev-servers.

I rebooted all EV-servers. Search still not working.
I'll do a trace of the shoppingservice? If that shows nothing, I'll log a case with support.

Thanks.

did upgrading to SP2 help resolve the issue?

Hello Andrew,

No it did not.
The problem still exists. We're now telling users who want to use this to which server they have to connect. Luckily, not too many use this.

I suspect an authentication issue between the directory server and the others.

When I get rid of all the red crosses, warnings etc in the eventlog of the ev-servers. I'll further troubleshoot.
Why the red crosses? Not due to the upgrade, but to a SQL cluster going crazy after the patching round. Loosing connection from in between 21:20 to 07:25. F*%&%^^*

I'm probably doing a db-move asap to SQL2008 (if and when available in the datacenter)

When done that, I'll further troubleshoot the issue.
