File System Archiving with EMC Isilon as a target

Hello,

I found the following post and it indicates that placeholders are not supported on an Isilon.  That is fine and dandy as we only want to target the Isilon as an FSA target.  Unfortunately, the post does indicate how to go about adding the Isilon as a target, nor can I find any documentation that explains how.  Can anyone shed some light?

Hi.  We have resolved this.  The customer is not interested in leaving any stubs behind.  We were able to target the contents of the Isilon via DFS.  The items are archived, not stubbed and deleted from the Isilon.

with FSA you have two options: placeholders or internet shortcuts. so if placeholders aren't supported on the device you're trying to target then you have to go with internet shortcuts.

how to add a FSA target:

1. launch the vault admin console

2. expand directory, expand site, expand targets, expand file servers

3. right-click, new, file server

4. follow the wizard prompts

Do you understand the implications of what you are doing? If Isilon is the target then the target is precisely where EV archives and "converts" regular documents and files to shortcuts or placeholders. However if placeholders are not supported and you select to use internet shortcuts This normally shows up with the IE icon of the internet (URL) shortcut. This is a .url text file that contains a hypertext link to the archived file. Placeholders are cool in the way archived files is transparent..after it is changed to a placeholder the metadata of the original file is pretty much intact and shows file type, size, modified date, icon to show if it is doc/xls. http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO57799 Rob Wilcox has a good blog post on this.. https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/blogs/what-placeholder Hope this helps...
