Fragmented Index partition

Ladies and Gents,

My Vault backups have been getting slower consistantly. Some of the drives are very fragmented. The actual archives are OK, they are on Centera. But the Index drive is heavily fragmented.

I'm wondering if it's Ok to defragment it while the Vault is running or I have to shut it down for the duration. Or any other problems I might encounter. Any comments are appriciated.

I'm running Vault 8.0.1 (SP1) on Windows 2008 x64 with Exchange 2007

Regards
Igs

Would definitely suggest stopping the indexing service whilst you do this
It's not specifcally supported so would suggest making sure everythings backed up before you do it

Your index drive will most likely get fragmented quickly thereafter though

thank you for you reply.

on that drive, there is a directory \System Volume Information. It takes up a massive amount of space (about 30%). what would I do with that.

also, do I just leave the drive as is?

Hi Igs.

Seems that indexing (windows) also fills this up.

Stop the indexing services and defrag. If you find that the indexes are very large 300GB and a defrag will take too long there is another option. Backup the indexes to tape or what ever other backup media you use. Delete the indexes and then restore the indexes from backup. The restore process does a sequential write to the disk and the results is unfragmented files
