Moving users from EV 9.0.3 to EV 10.0.3

Dear's,

I have EV 9 installed in my environment with exchange 2007 and have planned a seperate EV 10 infrastructure for exchange 2013.

I do not wish to upgrade existing EV 9 to EV 10 as it involves upgrade of windows also.

For migrating users I am planning the below steps:

1. Disable archiving in existing EV infrastructure.

2. Move mailbox to exchange 2013.

3. After 2 weeks enable archiving in EV 10 infrastructure.

4. Move archive from EV 9 to EV 10

My worry is between step 2 and 3 there will be a gap of 2-3 weeks, during this period will the users whose archiving has been disabledin EV 9 will be able to acess their old archives from outlook and OWA 2013 after their mailboxes have been moved to exchange 2013.

The plan for mailbox migration between two forest looks good. After disabling the archive in steps 2-3, EV extension would not be visible so archiving/restoration/retrival would not work from outlook/OWA. However user's can still access archived emails via archive explorer by giving EV wep app URL in IE (http://evserver/enterprisevault/archiveexplorerui.asp).

After moving the archive you can enable user's for archiving then outlook/owa functionality will start to work old + new archived emails.

Even after move archive we don't delete the source archive but we close it for future usage, old EV server (if remain active) can show emails via archive explorer/search (via IE).

Dear EV,

Mailbox migration will be in the same forest and domain, just the difference would be only deifferent EV sites .

EV extension would not be visible so archiving/restoration/retrival would not work from outlook/OWA.

How can I make the EV extension visible in OWA 2013?

Even after move archive we don't delete the source archive but we close it for future usage, old EV server (if remain active) can show emails via archive explorer/search (via IE).

But we need to shutdown the servers once all the archives has been moved, what would be issues which can be faced after shutdown.

The steps most likely would be similar even if AD forest is same  and only EV environment is different.

  1. Disable archiving of user mailbox from source EV environment (EV 9.0 + e2k7 exchange).
  2. Move mailboxes to Exchange 2013.

During this period users cannot retrieve archive emails via outlook /OWA as mailbox don’t have hidden message of EV. The only way to access archived emails is via Archive explorer/search via IE, provided user’s still have permission on their archive and EV 9.0 is up & running.

  1. Move archive between EV directories (From 9.0 to to 10.0 sp3/sp4), once move archive is successful then associate mailbox with newly created archive on EV 10.0 environment. (need to complete pre req for exchange 2013 & add into target with task running state).
  2. Users can use EV functionality (such as archive/retrieve/restore….etc) as now new archive of EV 10.0 will responds to user’s call. Now old archive in EV 9.0 environment would be in close state, no modification can be done but user can still access via IE (search/archive explorer) if needs to be.
  3. If above steps are successful then you can shut down old EV environment by taking backup & all.

For OWA 2013, EV functionality can be used by configuring EV wep app, Details information is present in TN http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO83364 with some excellent videos.

Dear EV,

How about if I paln as below:

1. Disable archiving in existing EV 9 infrastructure.

2. Move mailbox to exchange 2013.

3. Immediately enable archiving on EV 10 infrastructure once mailbox has been successfully moved.

4. Move archive from EV 9 to EV 10 after 2-3 weeks.

I guess with this plan, users will be able to successfully access their old archives(from EV 9) aswell as new archive (from EV 10) through outlook and OWA in between step 3 and 4when there will be a gap of 2-3 weeks.

That plan is also good, with less disturabance of end user archiving. As per Move archive guide (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH129236) this senerio is described as use case.

-------------------------------
Page no 21.
Move From: An archive associated with a mailbox that is disabled for archiving
Move To: An archive associated with a mailbox that is enabled for archiving
Shortcut processing should occur (and the Administration Console wizard will display a mailbox GUID match if mailbox is the same)
--------------------------------

For time when move archive runs, user's would not be able to retrive old shortcut as those belong to old EV environment & EV hidden message have new EV URL. New EV server would not be able to get information from old environment. But as soon as shortcut processing completes (shortcut would have updated infomration about new environment) archived items would open without any problem.

Dear EV,

The information you provided is really of great importance.

But will the users be able to successfully access their old archives(from EV 9) as well as new archive (from EV 10) through outlook and OWA for the duration between step 3 and 4 , as I will perform step 4 of moving user archive after 2-3 weeks.

Unfortunately No, users would not be able to retrive emails via OWA/Outlook until completion of step 4 because the shortcut would belong to old EV environment (EV 9) and mailbox would have been enabld with updated settings(EV hidden message) including new EV URL of new EV 10.0 environment.

For that period of time, you can suggest user to retrive emails by putting EV URL in internet explorer (http://OLD_EV_9.0/Enterprisevault/Archiveexplorerui.asp)

Once move archive completes it will update the shortcut with new setttings thus all emails can be accessible.

Dear,

What about if the user is enabled for Vault Cache and Virtual Vault, will it be available to user after moving to exchange 2013 and before moving his archive from EV 9 to EV 10 ?

Hi Shaikh,

As per move archive guide, we recommend customer to disable vault cache when migration is going on and resynch once move archive completes.

Page no 5 http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH129236

For Vault Cache/Virtual Vault users, the following procedure is recommended:

1. Disable Vault Cache before the archive is moved
2. Move the archive
3. Ensure that the hidden message is updated if Outlook is in cached mode (perform a Send/Receive)
4. Restart Outlook
5. Enable Vault Cache/Virtual Vault and perform Vault Cache synchronization.
