Windows 7 instant search results - copy EV items from Windows Explorer

Constanze

With Windows 7 instant search (search slot from the Windows icon in the left bottom corner) EV attachments from vault cache are found correctly, along with any other items from Outlook, local disk etc.

Show further results opens Windows Explorer.

One can tell from the icon displayed as well as the property "Attachment?" that it is an attachment of an EV archived item.

- How can you access from that view (Windows Explorer displaying search results, also telling the name of the mail item) the complete mail to e.g. copy it to another place? I found out if the corresponding mail itself is in the list of search results, the item can easily be copied, moved, deleted..., but the attachment listed only offers "open".

- If the corresponding .msg cannot be accessed, is it possible to perform any other action on the attachment but opening it? If I have 100 or more results I do not want to open them singularly and save them one for another to have them somewhere else.
It would not matter if the item was restored or the shortcut was copied.

We tried "Allow shortcut copy" desktop policy but it did not change behaviour no matter if "on" or "off".

Thank you for any ideas on this,
Constanze

See the following article.  This will not change what is currently in the archives, but would be a point-forward change.  I would recommend looking at all of the ramifications before making this change.

That article sounds like a perfect match, I will recheck with support whether it still applies for version 9 or 10 as the article only refers to 8 and earlier. And to get an impression what rebuilding our index really would mean. Thank you!

Symantec support answered in Case 416-724-612:

The following technote is applicable for EV 9.0 as well.

Prior to EV 10.0  versions :

By default  we use the “attachment granularity schema” in which when you make a search for  an archived item the results would return only the Top level message and no attachments.

If you want to display the attachments as well in the  search results you need to enable “item granularity” schema  through the registry ( Schema Type =1) .

The ItemGranularityOnly schema is disabled by default in Enterprise Vault.

The ItemGranularityOnly schema combines the information from attachments into the top level parent document in the index, so the attachments are not shown separately in the search.

Browser search and Integrated search will return top level document results and not individual attachments when we enable the ItemGranularityOnly schema

The EV 10.0 (64-bit indexing) engine no longer supports the Attachment Granularity schema and instead only supports the Item Granularity schema. This means that attachments are embedded with the parent message in the index and search results therefore only return top level items.

As a best practice, this registry key always recommended during initial configuration ( http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH71173  best practices registry and boot.ini) for version prior to EV 10.0.

For EV 10 Indexing changes refer guide  http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC4250

(page no 21 for Item granularity schema).

I also asked for index rebuild effort estimation as well and am waiting for a formula or s.th. like this to determine.

Answer support:

Unfortunately there is no Formula to calculate the amount of time that will be taken to complete the Index Rebuild. However please refer the following document for more information

Thanks WiT Send for the solution again.
