Bad performance with Netbackup Accelerator

Hello all,

Netbackup server  7.5.0.6 running on RedHat with accelerator enabled. Media server on Netbackup appliance 5220. Dedup done on media server.

We are taking in backup a Windows 2003 File server with a lot of small files (13 millions files on drive W).

Backup is running until 16:00 hours ! We had expected better performance with accelerator.... Using multiplexing between drives does not solve the problem.

Does anybody have the same problem ? Any idea to solve this issue.

That says it has no estimate of kb, so i assume this is its first run?

The first accelerator run is just a normal "slow" backup

This creates the information and track log and should be the last time it ever runs that slow - the next full backup will be a "real" accelerator backup

A typical example i see is 1st run takes 24 hours, next run takes 47 minutes

Let this run and do its stuff and then enjoy the accelerator on the next run!

We have the same issue with others windows file servers.

I would like to know if others Netbackup users are able to take in backup lot of Windows files (millions of files) in an acceptable time ?

That implies that this policy, or at least this schedule has not run before.

Otherwise perhaps the track log has become corrupt so either needs deleting or a force re-scan running to re-build it.

You're right, track log was not used (perhaps come from disabled ntfs change journal before starting the backup). We will try a new run this night with a force rescan.

It seems that all drives are getting backed up in a single stream?

Please enable multiple data streams as well as checkpoint restart.

This way only failure of drive letter will be restarted at last checkpoint.

Please also check that Client-side dedupe is used for this client - the default is media server only.
Host Properties -> Master server -> Client Attributes -> Add or select client name.

Thanks for your answer. We will enable multiplexing for the backup of this night (was disabled for debugging).

Concerning the client site dedup, we had also error 14 with accelerator. Symantec advices to disable client site dedup to solve this issue : http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH194456 and make the dedup on media (appliance 5220 in our case).

What would you advice ? Dedup on the client or appliance ?

It is pretty much down to your rate of change as that really affect the data that goes acroos the network

If not a massive change then no problem other than that first backup which will pass the whole lot over the network

Have received answer from the support concerning the "09/10/2013 17:09:46 - estimated 0 kbytes needed", it is not related to the accelerator :

The Estimated KB is not related to Accelerator. The client is not scanned to get this estimation KB. It is from the master backup image records in the catalog from the last backups.

I appreciate that - but this indicates it has not done this backup before - and if that is the case it would do a full run and not be able to use accelerator

A small change in the policy itself could cause this to happen and so would need a first full run to get thinks back to accelerator mode

Maybe you should try synthetic or flashbackup. I tried accelerator when it first came out and did not have a good experience. The change tracking log file was HUGE on many of my clients. And for some reason on many clients the change tracking log was corrupted or ignored...and I kept having to run the re-scan. Like I said this was when it first came out and maybe it is much improved by now. Synthectics are awesome and flashbackup works really well with servers with millions of files.

Flashbackup is really an awesome feature, and so much more mature than the accelerator.  It could solve this problem in no time.

I have personally only seen an advantage with Acelletor when used with client-side dedupe.

The thing is just to get that first, full backup to go through successfully.

Thanks everybody for help. We run the backup only for one disk W that hold 13 millions files this night. The backup job started yesterday at 4:00 pm, this morning at 06:30 am, the job was not yet finished :

I have to conclude indeed that Accelerator is not a solution for Windows file server with a huge number of files. I will check flashbackup.

Seems you have not yet had a successful First dedupe backup? As we've tried to explain, Accelerator needs that first successful backup that WILL take a long time. We have customers who are extatically happy with Accelerator on their Windows file servers using client side dedupe.

As per my experience the first backup needs to run, but my example was first run taking 24 hours and all sunsequent full backup runs taking about 47 minutes - flashbackup will not get anywhere near that!
