Cannot restore a VM directly to an ESX when Vcenter is down

When looking at the NetBackup interface, we hope we can restore a VM while Vcenter is down.

Unfortunately, restrictions are documented :

We can found this on this technote :
In vSphere versions 5.x and higher, it is not possible to restore directly to ESX when the ESX host is managed by a Virtual Center server.
see https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.HOWTO83771

However, in the NetBackup 7.7.1 documentation, restrictions are only for vSphere versions 5.x (but not for higher versions)... thus, one can understand that it works for vSphere 6.

Does anyone has tried to restore a VM directly to an ESX managed by a Vcenter in vSphere 4, 5 or 6 ?

And if this is not possible, is there any simple ways to bypass the problem.

This restricition is from Vmware side and not NBU.. Check the link below

Starting with ESXi 5.0, VMware has blocked the ability to restore virtual machines to ESX/ESXi hosts managed by vCenter Server. This is to ensure consistency between the information in the vCenter Server database and in the ESX/ESXi host's configuration and list of registered virtual machines.

This TN explains how restore can be done directly to ESX server:

Yes, but if the Vcenter is down, this method does not work - this explained at the beginning of the technote !

"it is not possible to restore directly to ESX when the ESX host is managed by a Virtual Center server"

I am looking for a way to bypass this restriction ?

Note : one way to bypass is to build a new ESX with no Vcenter, to restore to this ESX and to move the .vmdk ... we have tested this method - it works but it needs hardware and software... i am looking for an easiest way to do this !

Hello,

Repairing of vCenter should have precendece. If the vm is you vCenter: Have an ESXi with no Vcenter is the only way.

Is it possible to remove one ESXi from vCenter (without having acces to vCenter )? There are some impacts on vDS DRS cluster etc.

Better: put one ESXi in maintenance mode, shutdown, install ESXi on second boot device (SDcard, USB stick) add this new ESXi to Netbackup restore and move the VM boot origin ESXi remove temporary ESXi from NetBackup.

But regardless of your restore if its not the vCenter, repair it.

ciao

Thanks for confirmation that this is VMware limitation - not NBU. Pretty much thought so...
