Configure Clustered SQL backup

Hi dear all,

I want to backup clustered SQL database, I've installed netbackup client on each node. after discovery instance I find the sql instance but host is cluster name. I created a dns entry for that host to virtual cluster IP address (because failed to register instance whit cannot connect on host). finaly I registered instance and browse databases in mssql policy type, but backup failed with status code 2.

Also I've followed the netbackup 7.7.2 administration guide for SQL here: https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/doc/17221771-126559330-0/v114869768-126559330 but can't do step 8 because I can't find host mapping in netbackup 7.7.2.

I've just confused nowhere nobody have talked about cluster name need to resolve to virtual IP but without enter IP address I couldn't regsiter instance.

Thanks

Hi shahriar,

please check the administration guide for version 7.7.2, there you can see the Host Management configuration is missing since it's new in 8.1:

https://www.veritas.com/content/support/en_US/doc/ka6f10000000C6FAAU

Furthermore the detailed status with the error message would be helpful to check what is going wrong.

You should make sure the SQL permissions fit (sysadmin), local (windows) firewall allows connection, local security policy was configured etc. as described in the MSSQL Admin Guide.

Best regards,

Hermann

I have clicked on the link that you provided.

On that URL, there is a link to  Reviewing the auto-discovered mappings in Host Management.

Configuring mappings for restores of a distributed application, cluster, or virtual machine

This configuration is required for restores of a SQL Server cluster or a SQL Server availability group (AG). Configure these mappings in the Distributed Application Restore Mapping host property on the master server.

To configure mappings for restores of a distributed application, cluster, or virtual machine

  1. On the master server, open the NetBackup Administration Console.
  2. Select NetBackup Management > Host Properties > Master Servers.
  3. In the right pane, double-click on the master server.
  4. Select Distributed Application Restore Mapping.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Provide the name of the application host and the name of the component host.

See Example entries for SQL Server

Any kind of networking lookup are basics that need to happen before NetBackup is involved.
If you have a clustered SQL databases, there will already be a Virtual Hostname that is linked to a Virtual IP address.
All of this will be part of the Microsoft Cluster config.
Other applications will firstly connect to the SQL instance using the virtual hostname (that TCP-IP will route via the Virtual IP).  NetBackup needs to use the same network lookup. Nothing unique here.
I am surprised to hear that you had to create a DNS entry for this.

To troubleshoot status 2, please ensure that dbclient log folder exists on both cluster node.
The virtual hostname (and associated IP) should connect to the active node where the instance is up and running and attempt to run the backup there.
This is where we expect to find a log file in the dbclient folder that will assist with troubleshooting.
Please copy this log file to dbclient.txt and upload as attachment.

Coul you please reply to attempts to assist over here?
