Hi,
Volume Pools - They are created so that policy uses only media that are added to a particular volume pool. One can select volume pool to be used while creating a policy. So you are sure that to which media data from different groups/departments goes.
There are default pools - NetBackup(general pool all media are here by default), Catalog(media here are used for catalog bkups only),
DataStore,
Scratch(Media here are given to other pools as and when required).

Volume Groups - These indicate the physical location of the media. They are useful when we move media between differrent robotic libraries. This is useful if you want to move some media to an offsite location by ejecting them from robotic library using Vault
volume group name has robotnumber, robottype etc in it.

This is only for pre-6.0 NetBackup versions
Media database - resides on the media server as:
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/media/mediaDB (UNIX platforms)
\VERITAS\netbackup\db\media\mediaDB (Windows platforms)

Volume database - usually resides on the master server as:
/usr/openv/volmgr/database/volDB (UNIX platforms)
\VERITAS\volmgr\database\volDB (Windows platforms)

For NBU 6.0 onwards above databases are merged together, called
Enterprise Media Manager Database. It is on Master Server.
