Error 800 on master server

Hi All,

I run NBU 6.5.1 on windows ent.Server 2003 with 9 configured media servers. 6 are SAN media servers. It has been observed that the drive paths of the master and the media servers go down very often thereby causing jobs that are meant to pass through the 3 media servers to queue endlessly ( error 800)  and ultimately timeout with error 196. Attempts have been made to restart the tape libraries (TS3584), master and the media servers. This unfortunately has not solved the problem.

What could be the problem?

Like Gerald said - you need to find the root cause.
The reason for status 800 is normally listed in details tab. What do you see there?
Drives paths going down need troubleshooting between O/S and physical device. What errors are displayed in Event Viewer System and Application logs?
Check firmware and drivers for tape drives and HBA's. Check with tape vendors for their recommendation wrt HBA driver/firmware. Check switch logs for errors.
Add VERBOSE entry to vm.conf on all media servers and stop/start Device Management service to increase device logging to Event Viewer.
If your media servers are 32-bit O/S, use Veritas tape drivers rather than vendor drivers. It seems as if vendor drivers are not always 'share aware' and will mark tape drive as 'Missing Path' when the drive is in use by another media server.

You need to find the root cause, it may be a dodgy fibre or switch or loose fibre connection. To get you back you can try the following "switch up" procedure;

Shutdown everything, switch, library, master and media servers
Start the library and let it fully initailize
power up the switch and give it 3 minutes
power up the master server (confirm library and drives are visible)
lastly power up your media servers
