Error bptm (pid=10603) error requesting media. Tp Errno=Robot operation failed.

Error bptm (pid=xxxxx) error requesting media.  Tp Errno=Robot operation failed.

Warning bptm (pid=xxxxx) media id xxxxxx load operation reported an error.

Result...backups are not happening.

We are using NB 7.0.1 for unix.

So far I've restarted daemons....no change...then powered off / up our tape library...still no change.

I will next be checking to see if tapes are labeled/loaded correctly.

Any further ideas would be helpful...Thank you.

  • Did you ensure no tape where mounted in the tape drives before power cycling the robot ?
  • Have you run a inventory of  the robot ?
  • Are there free slots in the robot  (new tape occupying slot used by tape mounted in drives)

What does the syslog/message file say ?

There's a section in this T/N for that exact error - use robtest to determine functionality

Use robtest to test mount/dismount of tapes. See http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH83129

Ensure that you have VERBOSE entry in /usr/openv/volmgr/vm.conf  (restart NBU to enable) to ensure device-level actions and errors are logged to syslog (e.g. /var/adm/messages in Solaris).

1)Also check for thr /usr/openv/volmgr/debug logs.

2)As maria said try for robtest and move the tape from slot to drive.

3)U mentioned u restarted the daemons...go for library recycle and then the media server reboot.

4)Go in the /usr/openv/netbackup/logs and check for cat <log file name> |grep PID of bptm and see the actual error.

Thanks,
Giridhar

not a NetBackup problem.  Fix the robot arm and/or tape drive hardware.

Yes...it does appear more of a robot issue.  No free slots.  Also, it looked like the robot was having problem reading the bar code on one of the tapes.  We've removed the "bad" tape as well as removed a tape that was in the mail slot.  Won't be able to test to later in the day.  Will get back later to give status.  Thanks to everyone for your input!
