Error code : 1542[ An existing snapshot is no longer valid and cannot be mounted for subsequent operations]

Hi All,

In my environment, particularly in exchange servers with active and passive nodes..Backup was failing with error code 1542 after upgrading the client from 6.5.5 to 7.5.0.6. We need to upgrade the backup software still to 12 or more servers in our list. If anybody can assist why the job is failing after upgrade and how to solve it.

Temporary solution :

Rebooting passive exchange server in the cluster make the backup get successful.And changing the below attributes working mostly fine with the backups but still we need to upgrade other 12 servers without rebooting since it runs 24*7.

Microsoft Exchange server Attributes :

Database backup source : Passive copy only...

Exchange version

OS on Exchange cluster nodes

NBU version on all nodes

NBU Client Service logon account on Exchange nodes (this is sometimes set back to LocalSystem during NBU upgrade).

Backup Selection in policy.

Exchange version-->Exchange 2010

OS on Exchange cluster nodes--> Windows2008[x64]

NBU version on all nodes-->7.5.0.6

NBU Client Service logon account on Exchange nodes (this is sometimes set back to LocalSystem during NBU upgrade).--> will update you soon.

Backup Selection in policy-->NEW_STREAM

Microsoft Information Store:\MBX01-SG01-EMP and so on with different streams.

So, when was Exchange upgraded?

NBU 6.5.x did not support Exch 2010 - only as from NBU 7.0. 
Exch2010 clustered (DAG) policy config is completely different from previous versions (e.g. Exch2007).
Clustered Exch2010 have Data Availability Groups, so you cannot backup Information Stores.

Best to go through Exch2010 config as if this is a new setup.
