OK, your hcart3 tapes are LTO3, and the hcart2 tapes are LTO1.
An LTO3 drive will read and an LTO1 tape . It cannot write to it (this is down to the drive, not NBU)
hcartx is a label, nothing more, you can them 4mm if you like. The rule is this ...
A tape with label x will only be loaded into a drive with the same label.
x can be anything, as long as they match.

Hi,
This is not possible if the media is defined as hcart2 and the STU / drive is hcart3.
The density of the media must match the drive.
However, you could redefine the media as hcart3 also, then this would work.

ok i guess i am a tad confused.
the media that is hcart3 is 400/800gb
the hcart2 media is100/200gb.
i can redefine these older ones as hcart3?

You can have both (hcart2 and hcart3) since you don't plan to write or read LTO2 tapes on LTO3 drives. If you plan that you can either redefine medias as hcart2 or hcart3, or easily, redefine drives as hcart2 or hcart3. You only need to take care, cause drives and media types must match.
to change several tape types, create a script using 'vmquery' and 'vmchange'.
