I want to know how the OST protocol encapsulates the information over de LAN.

If it ain't RFC'd it's not a protocol IMO. ;)

That said, my intpretation is that OST is an optimized and tuned NFS stream (optimum packet and frame sizes)

You need not worry how the packets are encapsulated per packet, just that it's typically faster than normal CIFS/NFS.  It's also proprietary to Symantec and their hardware partners.

There is a forum subsection that is for partners to discuss topics such of these?

Apologies - I don't quite understand what it is that you are asking...

For information about OpenStorage, please see Section 2 of NBU Shared Storage Guide  www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3659.

Each OST vendor also has a manual for their particular Appliance with NBU.

Thanks for the comments. I will read the Guide. My inquietude was to Know Why preferred the LAN instead the Fiber Channel, so I could avoid congestion in network servers.

    Only LAN can be used. Best to have a dedicated network between media servers and Storage Server.

    is possible through NetBackup Appliances. Here is the simple topology;

    SAN Client --FC-- NBU5220Appliance --FC-- NBU5020Appliance.

    In this case deduplication has to be done on media server (NBU5520).

    If no appliance is there then;

    SAN Client --FC-- FT Media Server (Solaris or Linux) ----> MSDP or PDDO

    We got excellent results with this config in terms of backup performance.
