Right! Client installation is step 1!!!
See NBU Installation Guide for Windows http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3648
You will find a section in this manual for Unix Clients.
Client software can be downloaded from https://fileconnect.symantec.com/
You will need the Serial # on your license key certificate.
PLEASE also download the Client README file that explains how to join the Client download files and to extract with gtar. Please work with Solaris sys admin if you are not familiar with Solaris commands.
VMware is a different topic that should be addressed in a separate discussion...
VMs can be backed up as clients with software installed in each client or with the more efficient VMware vStorage API (again - different topic for separate discussion or search this forum - read this current thread: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/how-can-i-test-vstorage )

client hostname could not be found(48)
The 1st requirement is to ensure successful forward and reverse name lookup.
Windows-only environment is normally fine since all servers and clients are using DNS by default.
Solaris/Unix/Linux machines are not on DNS by default - this has to be done manually - speak to server owner.
The alternative is to add hosts entries to /etc/hosts file on Solaris client for master and all media servers that can backup this machine, and also add hosts entry for client on master and all media server.

Provide the details of Master, Media and client operating system versions and version of NBU installed on those....
Yes, NetBackup can backup Solaris clients. But need to check the compatibility.
48: Check for hostname resolution both the ways. Make entries in host files and also see that the client name mentioned in NBU client properties matching with #hostname output on the client.

Hi ramkr,
It is possible to backup solaris box under Windows netbackup server. Error 48 is mainly becoz of name resolution. Check it.

Try to ping master and media from the client and vice versa, if its fine , then retry the backup and check bpcd logs on client and it will provide you reason , as well as name of the interface which is not getting resolved. try to update that hostname in bp.conf/ BAR panel of master, media, client.

Able to ping the client ip from master server and added the ip and hostname in etc - hosts, but still getting error
/5/2012 12:17:24 PM - Error bpbrm(pid=19032) cannot connect to 157.184.228.238, The operation completed successfully. (0)
can't connect to client(58)
but how do i check whether the master server is pinging from solaris box, using putty may be? and if its not pinging how do i make it ping , if any one knows it can you share it, thanks

As per my 1st reply, you need to add hosts entries on the Windows server as well as the Solaris box.
On Windows server for Solaris client, on Solaris system for Windows server.
Forward and reverse lookup is very important in both directions.
Forward lookup is when ping works using hostname.
Reverse lookup means that both systems must be able to resolve ip address coming from a backup/connection request to a hostname.
Work with the Solaris system admin to add the Windows server's IP and hostname to /etc/hosts.
If you are familiar with Unix commands and vi to add entries to /etc/hosts, you can use putty to do this.
After doing this, you should be able to ping Windows server.
To test forward and reverse lookup, we use bpclntcmd command on server and client:
bpclntcmd -hn <hostname>
bpclntcmd -ip <ip-address>
This command is in <install-path>\veritas\netbackup\bin on windows
and in /usr/openv/netbackup/bin on Solaris/Unix/Linux.
Important fact about Netbackup - it keeps hostname lookup info in a cache file for 1 hour.
So, after you have made changes to hosts files, you need to clear NBU cache on server and client:
bpclntcmd -clear_host_cache
Good luck!

Hi Marianne,
Adding to your points, do we need to install netbackup client on solaris server as we do it on all other windows servers and VM?
07-04-2012 09:43 PM
Ops! You mean you don't have it installed yet. Yes you have to install client on it.

hello ramkr2020
I hope all above had already given lot of information. One more thing I would like to share. See the below link which may help you in installing the Netbackup Solaris Client.
