How to recover exchange 2003 mailbox to our exchange 2010 environment with NBU 7

Hi there,

We are trying to figure out if it is possible to take a backup image of Exchange 2003 mailbox/database and recover it via NBU 7 to our production exchange 2010 environment.

We are running nbu 7.0.1 on the master, 7.0 on the media and client servers.

This is a windows 2008 envrironment on master and exchange 2010 and windows 2003 for exchange 2003 and media server.

Does anyone know if this can be done...and if not, how we could achieve this in any fasion?

cheers,

Hi,

after discussing this with tech support and an individual that is an Exchange 2010 implementor, it is not possible.

The structure of exchange 2010 and 2003 is to different.

so if anybody has migrated to 2010 from 2003, you'll have to keep your 2003 server around for a while (until retention on the 2003 backup expires)...so a P to V of the machine would be helpful.

thanks, (marking as solved)

I've never done it, but I guess it's worth a try.

Just read up on the requirements to perfom mailbox restores in the NBU for Exchange manual.

e.g:

You can restore individual mailbox or public folder items (folders, messages, and documents) from the following types of backups:

■ MAPI mailbox backups. This backup type applies to Exchange 2007 and earlier.

................

■ The destination mailbox must exist to successfully restore a mailbox.

See manual - start at bottom of p.151

You might have to check with Microsoft to see if this is supported.
