Install netbackup on new server

Hi All

I'm planning to install the netbackup server on new hardware

The current net backup version is 7.5.0.6. I need to install and upgrade to lastest version 7.6 on new server

Could you please help to share step to do that without impact to current catalog?

Do we need to reinstall 7.5.0.6 on new and then upgrade or install 7.6 directly

Thanks

Are you also going to migrate to new OS?

What is existing OS on master server?
Which OS will be used for migration?

Important to check 7.6 OS compatibility: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH76648

Keeping OS compatibility in mind, you can migrate to new server by taking catalog backup on existing server, installing the exact same NBU version and patch level on the new server, keeping same hostname and installation path, followed by catalog restore on new server.

Were you looking for the new hardware to have a new hostname or the same as the existing hostname?

Hi Sclind

I'm aware about that?

If we change the hostname, do we need to update agent on client?

Can we use alias to point to new server?

Thanks

The hostname cannot be changed.
It has to be the same.
I have seen people trying to get away with hostname alias without success.
The EMM database will not successfully restore.

To change hostname, you need consulting engagement.
See:

How to migrate the NetBackup catalog information from one platform to another (UNIX to Windows or vice versa), rename a Master Server, cluster an existing Master Server, or merge multiple NetBackup domains.
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH31385

So, in summary:
Keep hostname the same and use TECH77447 to migrate.

Whether the migration will be a 1-step process depends on current Windows version and the version you want to migrate to.

W2003 -> W2008: 1-step migration
W2008 -> W2008:
1-step migration
W2008 -> W2012: 1-step migration
W2003 -> W2012: 2-step migration  (because of OS compatibility)
