Lotus Notes recovery with Transaction Logging very slow

Jim-90

Anybody else seen this behavior?

Using the Lotus Notes with transaction logging enabled saves an incredible amount backup capacity.  The down side seems to when you recover a mailbox to a specific day and time it can be very slow.  The recovery of the mailbox is straight forward and the restore job is fine and reports success.  But in the background its still incomplete.  The restored mailbox sits there in temporary state (indicated by numbers appended to the file).  Full usage of the mailbox doesn't happen until all the logs have been applied.  That process is very slow 15-60 mins

NBU 7.5.0.4, Win 2K8 X64

Configuring fast restores in the NetBackup for Lotus Notes database agent

Problem

When restoring a logged Lotus Notes database in NetBackup, the transaction log recovery can take a very long time because Domino Server requests the log extents only one at a time during the recovery.

Solution

During Lotus Notes restores, the NetBackup for Lotus Notes agent automatically restores any recycled transaction logs that are required for recovery. Typically one transaction log is restored at a time and recovery is completed for the transactions in that log. Because the restore of the log and application of transactions is a sequential process, the restore and recovery performance is slow.

Beginning with version 6.5, NetBackup prefetches the required transaction logs before recovery. Then multiple transaction logs can be restored at a time and made available for recovery.

For faster recovery of the databases, two settings need to be configured:

  • The transaction log cache path, where NetBackup temporarily stores the prefetched transaction logs.
  • The maximum number of logs to restore, which determines how many transaction logs are restored in a single restore job during recovery.
