You will need to migrate to W2008 using same NBU 7.0 version and then upgrade to NBU 7.6.

You mean to say, after OS installation ---> install NBU 7.0 -----> import cayalog -----> and then upgrade to NBU 7.6.

can we directly upgrade from NBU 7.0 to 7.6 ? any link or document.

Yes. You can upgrade directly. Will post URL shortly. Or else Google for NetBackup 7.x Upgrade Portal. You will find all sorts of good info and links to Sort and the Upgrade Guide.

Should I upgrade the master server in below mentioned step.

NetBackup 7.0 GA ----> NetBackup 7.1.0.1 ---->  NetBackup 7.1.0.4 ----> NetBackup 7.5.0.1 ----> NetBackup 7.5.0.7 ----> NetBackup 7.6 GA (7.6.0.1) -----> NetBackup 7.6.0.4

OR

Directly from NetBackup 7.0 GA to NetBackup 7.6.0.4.

7.0GA to 7.6.0.1 then 7.6.0.1 to 7.6.0.4

7.6.0.1 is a full media release

Use the Install & Upgrade Checklist for more info

I've said it already - you can upgrade directly.

NetBackup 7.x Upgrade Portal
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH74584

Remember to read through all URLs mentioned here - like SORT and Upgrade Guide.

Small correction to your earlier post:

after OS installation (using same hostname) ---> install NBU 7.0 (to same install directory and same patch level)  -----> recover catalog -----> and then upgrade to NBU 7.6.

As per revaroo's post - the GA release of 7.6 is 7.6.0.1, followed by patch to 7.6.0.4.

Does Zakirk have to worry about 'bit'ness? (32 vs. 64)

shouldn't matter when recovering the catalog as long as the Operating systems are of the same type

NetBackup v7.6 is 64-bit only, and so requires a 64-bit OS.  Zakirk's old W2003 server could be 32-bit, with 32-bit NetBackup Server.  Would this not be a problem?

Nope. That is why TECH77447 was written. To migrate from 32-bit OS to 64-bit.

Migration to W2008 needs to be done using current 7.0 version.
Once on 64-bit W2008, upgrade to 7.6 can be done since OS and hardware meets the compatibility requirements.

Got it.  Thanks.

Zakirk - remember to consider/check step 2 in TECH77447 re OST bit-ness.

Is there any other advice we can offer?  I'm especially thinking about elements of a NetBackup master server configuration which a catalog recovery does not, or might not, restore; e.g. touch and value files.

Does a v7.0(.1) catalog recovery restore:

1) SLP LIFECYCLE_PARAMETERS file?

2) The altnames folder and files?

3) Master server client attributes (i.e. bpclient settings)?

4) The '_notify' scripts?

5) Buffer tuning files?

6) MSDP encryption settings?

7) NetBackup KMS configuration?

Others?
