NBU7.0 Priority between Automatically backup and User backup

StarWorld
Level 3

I have a backup job, it must be called by application, because no backup is allowed during server's application running.

We use ARCserve to perform backup before, after the application shutdown, the application call a scritp to perform the backup job.

now we change to NBU 7.0, I add a new policy and create 3 three schedule, full backup on weekend, increment backup from Monday to Thrusday, and user backup when needed, then on the client side, edited the script to call bpbackup.exe, I add two script, one for fullbackup, the other for increment.

I just wonder, if there is priority exist, when the time for both full backup and user backup comes, which type of backup will perform or both of the 2 types of them will perform?

Off course as you said  ""I add a new policy and create 3 three schedule""

if you define a schedule for user you will definitely configure a Time Window for it and when you define the auto backup via NBU Server you will definitely define a Time Window for that as well. So you select different time for both backup in the Time Window

As both jobs are of same policy, Job priority attribute will not make any difference.

Generally a backup job with lower frequency schedule will have the higher priority.

Dear all,

Thanks for your reply, please see the picture below.

We need user backup because the time for shutdown application is not always the same.

My question is if the time on Sunday 2:00 am,  the application called user backup, at this time which backup will execute? full or user?

Planning user backup and archive schedules, Page # 158 of Netbackup Administrator Guide Vol1 for windows

Guide Extracts

To plan schedules for user backups and archives, consider the following:
■ What are the most convenient times for users to perform backups? If possible, do not permit user backups and archives when automatic backups are running. If an automatic backup is running when a user submits a backup or archive, NetBackup usually queues the user job. The job is not queued if there is a limiting setting. (For example, the Limit Jobs per Policy policy attribute or the Maximum Jobs per Client Global Attributes host property.)

If the automatic backup continues to run, the user job misses the backup window. User jobs delay automatic backups and can cause backups to miss the backup window. See “Limit jobs per policy” on page 103 and “Maximum jobs per client” on page 436.
Which storage unit should be used for user backups? Use a different storage unit to eliminate conflicts with automatic backups.
Which volume pool should be used for user backups? Use a different volume pool if you want to manage the media separate from the automatic backup media.
Caution: If the retention period expires for a backup, it can be difficult or impossible to restore the archives or backups.
How long should an archive be kept? Consider setting the retention period for archives to infinite, since the disk copy of the files is deleted. For more information, see “Retention” on page 144.
Creating separate policies for user schedules
User backup and archive schedules do not need to be in a policy separate from automatic backup schedules. If you create separate policies for user backups or archives, the considerations are similar to those for automatic backups. In user backup schedules, however, no backup selection list is necessary because users select the objects before they start the backup or archive.http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH52803

thanks Zahid, through active monitor, I can see my User backup(use batch file) started at 6:10 am this morning, backup type is IncrementBackup. and my increamentbackup did not start at 6:00 pm last night, why?

My batch file has only one line:

C:\Progra~1\VERITAS\Netbackup\bin\bpbackup.exe -p mypolicy -i -s IncrementBackup -L C:\BacupLog.txt

Backup successful, please check the following logs:   ????   What are you saying ??

U asked me """" my increamentbackup did not start at 6:00 pm last night, why?

I am confused what are you trying to ask. Sorry would you please elaborate me what you are trying to ask

StarWorld

the job started at 5:38 am this morning, accroding to our application's log,  at that time my application stopped and then called the script to start backup.

I also scheduled increment backup at 6:00 pm from Moday to Thursday(as I have mentioned before I scheduled 3 type backups), this type of backup didn't start, so I ask "My incremetbackup did not start at 6:00 pm last night"

I think startworld you try to see the logs for your last night job failed(for example go to all log entries) . as far as the policy making is concern you kindly follow the recommanded solution of Netbackup. which says you do make a different policy for user backup

If you want to keep working your own way so i have a recommandation. When your user trigger the backup first he make sure that either any backup must not be running. If it do thn the user backup job will be in queue till the time window close.

I would like to verify just what your policy is set up as. Can you supply the output from the following command:

<installdir>/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bppllist <policyname> -U

(besure to x out your client server name when posting)
