Current confuguation is a W2K3 R2 Enterprise SP2, scsi connected to a Dell ML6010 Tape Robot. Loaded with NetBackup 6.5.3 and ran a policy Type - NDMP.

The Backup was successful, at least that is what the log stated but when I try to restore a file from the backup I get the following error;

12/29/2008 1:32:14 PM - restoring image netappfiler_1229654369
12/29/2008 1:32:14 PM - Error bpbrm(pid=3800) cannot retrieve NDMP credentials for host windows_server, error = 254
12/29/2008 1:32:19 PM - Error bpbrm(pid=3800) client restore EXIT STATUS 114: unimplemented error code 114
12/29/2008 1:48:14 PM - restored image netappfiler_1229654369 - (cannot connect on socket(25)); restore time 00:16:00
12/29/2008 1:48:15 PM - end Restore; elapsed time: 00:16:02
the restore failed to recover the requested files(5)

Is "windows_server" the hostname of your NDMP host?  I'm guessing it's not.  This is probably the trouble.

Open up the BAR (Backup, Archive & Restore) interface and select the menu: File > Specify NetBackup Machines and Policy Type.

Make sure the "Destination client for restores" is the NDMP host.

(You may need to make sure the "Policy type for restores" is NDMP as well??)

Retry your restore and let us know if it's working!

Thanks CRZ, you were correct, I didn't have the "Destination client for restores" set correctly.

How about another question, when I try to do a restore it take a very long time (10-15min) for the folder tree to come up so I can select the files I want to restore. Any ideas?

The restore process has to search the catalog for all the dates in the span on the screen.  So:

  • The more files in the backup image
  • The more images being searched (larger date window)
  • Use of compression in the catalog

Will all make it take longer to display the file hierarchy.  Compression especially will kill performance.  Best is to shrink the restore window to as small as possible so fewer images have to be searched.
