Need to know how to move NetBackup v6.0 metadata from a Unix server (Solaris 8) to a new server (Solaris 10) that houses NetBackup v7.5.

So this is not a typical upgrade where NetBackup v6.0 lives on a Unix server and is then upgraded in place to NetBackup v7.5.  We are installing NetBackup v7.5 on a new server with Solaris 10 OS installed.  After the NetBackup v7.5 is installed we then hope to move the metadata from the NetBackup v6.0 currently installed on a server running Solaris 8 OS to the new NetBackup v7.5.  After the successful move of the v6.0 metadata we will decommission the server housing the Netbackup v6.0.

Has anyone done this in the past and how do I go about moving the v6.0 metadata to v7.5 on the new server.  I believe I read that the metadata for v6.0 is stored in two places (catalog and flat file).

I appreciate any assistance.

This is the ONLY supported way to migrate:

Using catalog backup and recovery to transfer NetBackup catalogs between UNIX or Linux master servers as part of a hardware refresh
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH77448

So, migrate to new server using the exact same NBU hostname, version and patch level, then upgrade.

Be sure to carefully go through NBU Upgrade portal: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH74584
and each TN that it refers to, especially the NBU 7.5 Upgrade Guide and SORT.

Big changes from 6.0 to 7.5.  You could copy /usr/openv/netbackup/db/images folder to the new server.  Don't expect any kind of support if it doesn't work though.

Thanks for the idea, it provides another way to investigate possible approaches to try.

Thanks so much for your reply Marianne, I will review the documents to see how to perform the migration.  We hadn't considered installing v6.0 on the new server, migrating a catalog backup and then upgrading until my post on this forum.

There is no way to migrate/import/restore catalogs between different NBU versions.
Only same NBU version and patch level, same hostname, same installation path.
The only way that a migration between different versions can be done is with assistance of a certified Catalog Manipulation partner: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH31385 .
