NetBackup 7 failing to backup RDMs with vStorageAPI

We just upgraded to NetBackup 7.

We have a master and 2 media servers.  All 3 are "backup hosts", what in VCB terminology would be "backup proxy servers".  We are running vSpehere 4 Update 1.  Many of our VMs (maybe 1/3) use virtual mode RDMs.  We have _no_ physical mode RDMs.  The LUNs for all VMFS and RDM volumes are presented to  the master and both media servers.

We setup new backup policies with the following attributes:
  • Policy type: FlashBackup-Windows
  • Limit jobs per policy: 2
  • Perform block level incremental backups: unchecked
  • Perform off-host backup: checked
  • Use: VMware backup host
  • Machine: (one of our master or media servers)
  • Perform snapshot backups: checked and greyed out
  • Client name selection: VM hostname
  • Virtual machine backup: Mapped full VM backup
  • Transfer type: san
  • Virtual machine quiesce: Enabled
  • Exclude unused and deleted blocks: Enables
  • Existing snapshot handling: Ignore
  • Monolithic Export (VCB only): Disabled
  • Snapshot mount point (VCB only): (blank)
  • Clients: (one or more VMs which may or may not have RDMs, specified by FQDN)
  • Backup Selections: ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES
When these policies run, they complete without error, but do not appear to backup data from our RDMs.

Prior to our NetBackup 7 upgrade we ran NetBackup 6.5.4 and backed these VMs up using VCB (file-level, _not_ image level).  That worked fine.

I do not know to answer to your question.
But till you find the answer, you can use this technote to force netbackup 7 to use VCB.

I belive you can backup them up but you have to have the NBU client installed on the VM.. Even then i think the only way to backup the RDM is with the client not the vStor API
