Netbackup 7.7.1 AIX Installation issue

AnthonyTsang

Dear all,

I tried to install Netbackup 7.7.1 in AIX 7.1 using the binary file "NetBackup_7.7.1_AIX64.gz as a media server

I followed 7.7 installation guide to install. Of course, I checked all connection is fine after completed the installation

But, I cannot recognize the media server name in Master Server after added that media server name to media server list and run bprdreq -rereadconfig.

That media server can only backup as a standard client.

Anyone know any to fix it ?

Did the Client installation not give you a message to say that NBU server software is already installed?

Best to start again...

Please follow steps in NetBackup Installation Guide  to list and then remove all NBU software installed on the new server.

Reinstall NBU server software only (it includes NBU Client software).
Be sure to say 'no' to the question if this is the master server.
Specify master's hostname in reply to prompt for master server name and EMM server name.
Make a note of the Installation log file location.

Add Media server to Master's Server Server list (if not already there).

Restart NBU on master server. (Important step - DO NOT SKIP)

Confirm forward and reverse name lookup in both directions between master and media server as well as port connectivity on 1556.

Check if media server is listed with nbemmcmd commands on the master server.

The requirement is actually to restart NBU on the master after adding a new Server or Media Server entry.

Is master server listed as 1st SERVER in bp.conf on the media server?
Itself as subsequent SERVER entry?
EMMSERVER entry pointing to the master.

Can you see if the media appears in the list when you run these 2 commands on the master server?

nbemmcmd -listshosts -verbose

nbemmcmd -getemmserver

If media server does not show in these commands, try this:

nbemmcmd -addhost -machinename <hostname> -machinetype media -masterserver <server_name> -operatingsystem <os_type> -netbackupversion <level.major_level.minor_level>

(See http://www.veritas.com/docs/000043801 )

Where exactly are you trying to see the media server ?

But, I cannot recognize the media server name in Master Server

Have you restarted netbackup on the Media server after adding it to the media server list on the Master  ?

The ltid daemon on the Master might also have to be started/restarted

The standard questions: Have you checked: 1) What has changed. 2) The manual 3) If there are any tech notes or VOX posts regarding the issue

It is actually bpdbm on the master server that needs to be restarted.

Is master server listed as 1st SERVER in bp.conf on the media server? => Yes
Itself as subsequent SERVER entry? => Yes
EMMSERVER entry pointing to the master => No this setting

bp.conf in below

=================================
SERVER = <Master Server Name>
SERVER = <That Media Server Name>
CLIENT_NAME = itd1sys01z
CONNECT_OPTIONS = localhost 1 0 2

===================================

Source binaries:

NetBackup_7.7.1_AIX64.tar and
NetBackup_7.7.1_CLIENTS1.tar

Is it using binaries to install NBU7.7.1 in AIX correctly ?

Do NOT install Client binaries after installing NetBackup_7.7.1_AIX64. The Server binaries include Client binaries as well. Please reply to my suggestions for steps on the master server as well?

I have completed installed NetBackup_7.7.1_AIX64, then I run the Client1 to install AIX client.

Is it uninstall the client and then reinstall NetBackup_7.7.1_AIX64 ?

Can you see if the media appears in the list when you run these 2 commands on the master server?

nbemmcmd -listshosts -verbose => NO

nbemmcmd -getemmserver => NO

As Marianne pointed out, you have a wrong setup in media server.

When you installed a host as NBU media sever (using NetBackup_7.7.1_AIX64.tar), you DO NOT run NetBackup_7.7.1_CLIENTS1.tar on top of it. Running it will turn your media server back to a NBU client. That's why you don't see the EMMSERVER entry in bp.conf &  command outputs.

Once your media server is setup properly, you will need to use "nbemmcmd -addhost...."  so master server (EMM) knows about this new media server. Marianne also covers that in her first response to you.

Delete all related NBU and reinstall success
