Hello Veritas,

Please help me to know whether Netbackup 773 is able to backup VMs living on VMFS datastore of vSphere.

vsphere is 6.5

VMFS is 5.0.

I checked Netbackup sort and it showing VMFS 6.0 is not supported with NBU SAN mode.

But do not know VMFS 5.0 is supported please help to guide with correct info.

Herewith Veritas TN dated December 5, 2016:

Veritas NetBackup support for vSphere 6.5
http://www.veritas.com/docs/000116592

For both NBU 7.7.3 and 8.0 you will see the following:

  • VMs that reside on VMFS 6.0 cannot be backed up by using SAN transport mode. As a workaround, use NBD, NBDSSL, or HotAdd transport mode to backup such VMs. SAN transport mode support for VMs on VMFS 6.0 is planned for a future NetBackup release.

I cannot find any document with reference to VMFS 5.0

This forum post seems to indicate that SAN backup of VMFS 5.0 might be working:

The only way to be sure is to read the VDDK release notes to see if support has been dropped for VMFS 5.0 from any given VDDK version, see here:

https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.000010289

N.B:  Different versions of NetBackup (including different updates - and - including different EEBs) can introduce different embedded VDDK versions within NetBackup.  I mean, one cannot ever simply say NetBackup v7.X always supports VMFS vY.Z - because it always depends on whether you have upgraded NetBackup and/or installed certain EEBs which include VDDK updates.
