Netbackup Storage LifeCycle Management Service not starting

Gonz

Employee

I have implemented an Storage Lifecycle Policy to backup and clone against 2 DDBoost DataDomain systems.

Duplicate was not working, and I noticed that the reason was that the "NetBackup Storage LifeCycle Manager Service" was not started and it was also failing when trying to start it.

I decided then to upgrade NetBackup 7.5 from NetBackup 7.5.3 to 7.5.4, but after the upgrade, I still have the same problem, the nbstserv.exe service does not start.

If I go to services.msc and try to start the service I get 4 events

Service is starting
OID:226:V-1-53 The LogDirectory setting for the given originator was not provided in the Logging configuration file.
Service is stopping
Service is stopped

The originator is the nbstserv.exe and in the nblog.conf I have defined this:

# 226. Storage Services

226.L10nResource=nbstserv
226.NtEventLogSourceName=nbstserv
226.OIDNames=nbstserv
226.LogDirectory=nbstserv

I have the nbstserv folder under \Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\logs\nbstserv

But there is no log there.

I am not NetBackup expert.

Could you please help me to figure out why logs are not being generated, why this error message is coming: OID:226:V-1-53 The LogDirectory setting for the given originator was not provided in the Logging configuration file, so I can troubleshoot why the service is not starting.

Thanks in advance

Gonzalo

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH45907I manage to fix the problem:

I found this technote:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH153189

That suggested:

vxlogcfg -p 51216 -o Default -l

To check what it the log default

LogDirectory=

The LogDirectory was empty

so I followed:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH45907

To change the log location

After this change the "NetBackup Storage LifeCycle Manager" could be started and remained that way.

What is the LogDirectory value of the "Default" in nblog.conf? Probably attach with your nblog.conf and we can check.

If nblog.conf is corrupted, try following this: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH163327

Thanks for replying:

Nagalla, see the output of the suggested commands. None of them return valid output

F:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin\admincmd>vxlogcfg -l -p NB -o 226
V-1-8-0  Invalid setting/value is passed

F:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin\admincmd>vxlogcfg -l -p NB -o All
V-1-8-13 Originator value ALL is not supported for List command. Please specify
the exact originator.

Watsos, this is Windows, but it does not seem to be a corrupter nblog.conf file

I renamed nbconf.log.org to nbconf.log and the result is the same.

See below the content of the nblog.conf. I do really appreciate all the help

Hello Nagalla

I see the following:

F:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin\admincmd>vxlogcfg -l -o nbstserv -p NB
V-1-8-16 Unable to decipher the Originator name "nbstserv".  Please try using the Originator ID.

226 is the originator id for this.

so lets try this..

vxlogcfg -l -o 226 -p NB

if this also got failed , i just what to make sure if other IDs are working or not.

vxlogcfg -l -o 111 -p NB

It is failing for all the originators:

F:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin>vxlogcfg -l -o 226 -p NB
V-1-8-0  Invalid setting/value is passed

F:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin>vxlogcfg -l -o 111 -p NB
V-1-8-0  Invalid setting/value is passed

The nblog.conf file appears to be corrupt. Only fix really is to copy one off another machine of the same version. You are not meant to manually edit this file, in my experience it tends to break it. Martin

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH45907I manage to fix the problem:

I found this technote:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH153189

That suggested:

vxlogcfg -p 51216 -o Default -l

To check what it the log default

LogDirectory=

The LogDirectory was empty

so I followed:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH45907

To change the log location

After this change the "NetBackup Storage LifeCycle Manager" could be started and remained that way.

Well done  - so the log dir was empty ...

Which is odd, as it isn't empty in the output you posed above

Default.LogDirectory=F:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\logs

Oh well, guess there was something wrong in the file somewhere,  I'll try that trick next time I get a similar case, I usually fix them by sending a new nblog.conf file, but this was might be quicker, though of course it might not work in all cases ...
